BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT
In January 2024, the San Council organised a meaningful back-to-school project, providing essential supplies to students in three San community schools located in Kalahari, Plaatfontein, and Carnavon. The beneficiary communities included the Khomani San, !Xun and Khwe, and /Xam.
This initiative aimed to support educational opportunities by distributing stationery and sanitary packs to students in need. We believe that access to these basic resources is vital for fostering a positive learning environment and promoting educational equity.
THE WAY OF THE SAN: UNTOLD STORIES - ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
The San Council is proud to announce our latest project, "The Way of the San - Untold Stories." Supported by the National Heritage Council, this initiative is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich oral history of the San people through the voices of our elders.
As part of this project, young members from the Khomani San, !Xun, Khwe, and /Xam communities are receiving training in audio-visual recording techniques. This training equips them with the skills to capture and document the invaluable stories and cultural heritage that have been passed down through generations.
By empowering our youth to engage in this work, we aim to create a lasting record of the San people's traditions, wisdom, and experiences. "The Way of the San - Untold Stories" represents a bridge between generations and a commitment to honouring and preserving our unique heritage for the future.
KALAHARI DESERT FESTIVAL 2024
The South African San Council is proud to host the Kalahari Desert Festival, an annual event that showcases the vibrant culture and heritage of the Northern Cape. Since its inception in 2013, the festival has grown in popularity and significance, becoming a highlight in the region's cultural calendar.
The 2024 edition of the Kalahari Desert Festival took place on March 1 and 2 at Erin Game Farm in the heart of the Kalahari. The festival featured a diverse lineup of performances, art, music, and traditional practices, offering attendees a unique opportunity to experience the rich culture of the San people and other communities in the Northern Cape.
This annual festival is not just a celebration of tradition; it's a testament to the region's commitment to cultural diversity and inclusion. Through music, dance, crafts, and storytelling.
